What happens at a cap

Caps count recipients. An email to three people counts as three, across to, cc and bcc — as Amazon SES counts it.

  • At 80% of a cap

    We tell you

    When an account has used 80% of its daily or monthly cap, we email its owners and show a banner in the dashboard. Sending carries on.

  • At 100% of a cap

    Sending stops until it resets

    The API refuses further emails with quota_exceeded (HTTP 429), and nothing is queued. The daily cap resets at midnight, Lagos time; the monthly cap on the 1st of the month. There is no overage: going over is never charged.

A new account starts in the sandbox: it sends only to its own team’s confirmed addresses, up to 100 a day, until we have reviewed it. Once approved, its daily cap starts at 1,000 — or the plan’s, if lower — and doubles each day its bounces stay under 2% and complaints under 0.05%, until it reaches the plan’s cap.

Message bodies are deleted 72 hours after sending. The log — recipients, subject, status and events — is kept for the plan’s retention: Free 7 days, Starter 30 days, Pro 30 days.
